Whitney Recap

{ December 14th, 2009 }

Whitney Exterior

Last week’s meeting at The Whitney was a calm and reflective way to end the year. What a rich and warm aura The Whitney has with the vibe of Detroit’s storied history seeping from the walls. There were a lot of new faces, some regulars, and seems like ideas are being tossed around and perhaps some ventures taking place…..?

Elizabeth Ross of Detroit Freelance took sponsorship to a whole new level. Her presentation for her startup company with telecommunications, credit card processing, websites, servers, and promotional material was at once commanding and inspiring. Her business model of a portion of the profits going back into locally active non-profit organizations was also intriguing. Elizabeth – THANK YOU SO MUCH for sponsoring!

Stay active on the blog and Facebook and pass on your ideas. Happy Holidays. See you in February.

This is a friendly reminder our Winter Wonderland End of Year Holiday Detroit Chapter of Startup Drinks is this Thursday at 6pm at the Whitney in Detroit. A sponsor has also graciously stepped forward- Elizabeth Ross of Detroit Freelance. We can not thank you enough and here’s to yours and ours startup ventures.

Let’s celebrate the end of the year, hustle for the future and get a head start on all those resolutions we’ll be thinking about soon. Let’s help one other out with ideas and advice and how we can continue to make Startup Drinks a vital piece of Detroit’s ingenuity.

See ya there.

Last month’s meeting at The Dakota Inn Rathskellar was an intimate affair followed by some good old German beer drinking and singing. Beforehand we all got to talk about different projects we were working on and new relationships were made with several meetings taking place in the following weeks.

Things are only getting better, deeper, and richer for Detroit’s Chapter of Startup Drinks. There is momentum from our last meeting at Slows and more is planned for future gatherings. While the aim is to have an adult beverage or two, we do want to share about our entrepreneurial (mis)adventures and grow them as well. Stay tuned about more information coming for our next meeting. So here’s the deal- if you are familiar with The Dakota Inn you will smile and appreciate the authenticity such a venue exhibits. If you have never heard of it, you are in for a treat and the opportunity to see a Detroit gem.

Dakota Inn - Rathskeller

We will be meeting Thursday, October 15 at 6pm at The Dakota Inn Rathskeller - 17324 John R in Detroit. Also, if you stay past 730, you will be able to see Mike Montgomery & Kerry Price in the Rathskeller’s legendary “Anything Goes” evening.

We also wish to thank Fran Yee who conceived and executed the plan to meet at The Rathskeller- well done!

Follow Up to Slows

{ September 1st, 2009 }

Slows

Last week’s meeting at Slow’s BBQ was a great stride and development in the history of Detroit Startup Drinks. We estimate around 30 people showed up and a lot of contacts, both old and new, were made. There was a great spirit in the air that the event was within the City of Detroit and I was pleasantly surprised at the number of Detroit small businesses and startups present. In our tech and creative communities there is a lot of work to be done, a lot of opportunity, and Detroit Startup Drinks is positioning itself to foster this growth and these relationships.

Slows 2

The essence of our chapter is to be loose and social, to not fall into the rigid ways of networking groups. This is a place to put it out on the table and take the ink pen to the bar nap. However, while talking to some individuals, there is a desire to provide more of an outlet and a resource. We are open to any ideas and please comment on them here or in the Facebook Group. Some thoughts are to have a speaker share some insights into their startup experience and also provide ways to meet and talk with the people they need to.

Also, many thanks to Jason Brown of Public City PR for buying the first round for everyone, the Hitachino I had was a real summer treat.

Stay tuned, we’re preparing for October and it will be in the spirit of Octoberfest, old school Detroit style.

See You Wednesday the 26th

{ August 25th, 2009 }

Things are growing for the local chapter of Detroit Startup Drinks. Our Facebook page is growing and we received a little bit of press this past Sunday from Jillian Kushner at the Oakland Press. It is a well done article in that it captures the spirit within which our local chapter began with. The meeting on Wednesday the 26th at Slows we anticipate to be much larger than our kickoff. Close out the summer nicely and become focused around your ideas with the help of a beverage. See you there.

Slows Bar BQ - August 26 - 6PM

{ July 25th, 2009 }

Slows Bar BQ Many thanks to our members who came and raised a glass in June despite poor planning from the organizers who negated to look at the downtown Detroit calendar, the event being the night of the Tigers playing the Cubs and the Fireworks.

But live and learn- this time we’ve given more thought to schedules and venues……and drinks. We’ve organized the second meeting of Detroit Start Up Drinks at Slows BBQ on August 26 at 6pm. There are no major sporting events and weather permitting we can move out onto the patio. Slows has one of the best beer selections in town.

A sponsor has also come forward in buying the first beer first (while supplies last!) in Jason Brown and PublicCityPR. Many thanks to Jason for helping our chapter grow and grace us with libation.

PublicCityPR

May we all learn from one another and nurture the budding entrepreneurial spirit coming out of our city.

june 2009

Last Wednesday was our kickoff shinding for the Detroit Chapter of Startup Drinks at historic Cliff Bells, the same night of the Tigers spanking the Cubs as well as the Detroit Fireworks. The serious about startups and drinks were in attendance.

Their selection of beers was pretty impressive, including the coveted Hitachino from Japan. I was also told by Alok Sharma they house a fine selection of rye whiskies. The Albert Kahn décor was inspiring and conducive to good conversation about what we’re all working on. Jake Sigal also had wise words of advice and inspiration as he shared information about livioradio.com’s meteoric rise this past year with the Pandora Radio. A very cool piece of gear. Many thanks for bringing down the presentation.

We casually discussed the goal and vibe of our Chapter and thought it best to make our meetings bi-monthly as all of us are busy trying to start something up. Be on the lookout for the next meeting in August. Please post your ideas and thoughts about where might be a good place as well as ideas for the group.

Big up!
